6 Best Exfoliation Methods You Should Try at Home

Our skin is repairing itself regularly and leaves layers of dead skin which makes our face look dull. It also affects the absorption of essential nutrients to the skin and blocks the sweat glands that cause other skin problems like acne, whiteheads, and blackheads. This is the reason why we need to exfoliate the skin to reveal healthier and brighter skin.

Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin by using an exfoliant. Though some manufactured exfoliants contain ingredients that may cause harm in some ways to your skin and our environment. So, I always prefer to exfoliate my skin using natural ingredients that can just be found in a kitchen and use the right tools for the ultimate exfoliating experience. Below are my 5 best exfoliation methods you should try at home that you don’t want to miss.

  1. Honey

It contains a small amount of gluconic acid and some alpha-hydroxy acids, that gently remove dead skin cells to brighten the complexion. It is also served as hydrating, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory which is great for me to prevent skin problems. I used raw and organic honey it gives the best results.

To exfoliate the skin with honey:

  • Put a ½ teaspoon of honey into your hand.
  • Apply to the skin and massage it in a circular motion.
  • Rinse with warm water.
  1. Sugar

A sugar cane contains glycolic acid a natural chemical exfoliant that helps me remove the dead skin safely and effectively by applying it gently.

To exfoliate the skin with sugar:

  • Make a paste using raw sugar and olive oil.
  • Apply to skin and massage in a circular motion.
  • Leave it for 10 minutes.
  • Rinse with water.
  1. Coffee

Ground coffee is a great exfoliant that helps to scrub away dead skin by massaging it into the skin. Caffeine is also known to fight signs of ageing as it tightens and brighten my skin. I used finely ground coffee so it will not cause tears on my skin.

To exfoliate the skin with coffee:

  • Mix a ¼ teaspoon coffee ground with yogurt or coconut oil.
  • Apply to face and massage in a circular motion.
  • Leave for 5 minutes.
  • Rinse with water.
  1. Papaya

The papain enzyme found in papaya is an effective and perfect natural exfoliant that dissolves dead skin cells to make the skin smooth. I prefer to use green papayas as the papain enzyme is more dominant in young fruit.

To exfoliate the skin with papaya.

  • Mash papaya into a smooth paste.
  • Apply to skin and massage in a circular motion.
  • Leave for 15 minutes.
  • Rinse with water.
  1. Oatmeal

Is known for its therapeutic anti-inflammatory properties and many other benefits for the skin. Oatmeal is also a common ingredient in skincare products because it is gentle and non-irritating. I choose organic oatmeal that is not exposed to chemicals.

To exfoliate the skin with oatmeal.

  • Mix 1 tbsp. oatmeal with 1 tbsp. of coconut oil or honey.
  • Apply to face and massage in a circular motion.
  • Leave for 5 minutes.
  • Rinse with water.
  1. Virgin Coconut Oil Exfoliating Scrub

This is one of the best oils for facial care. It has amazing hydrating properties and leaves all skin types smooth and glowing. Virgin coconut oil is organic and antimicrobial, restores the skin's natural balance, and naturally clears away skin dead skin cells.

Its properties make it a great ingredient to use in an exfoliation scrub mix.

To exfoliate the skin with virgin coconut oil:

  • Mix 1/2 cup of extra virgin coconut oil (cold-pressed), 1 cup of granulated, and 5 drops of essential oil for fragrance (optional)
  • Apply to face and massage in a circular motion.
  • Leave for 5 minutes.
  • Rinse with water.

These exfoliant methods that I used is less harmful to the skin, affordable, easy to prepare, and most of all effective. To exfoliate I make sure that everything I used is clean and also my face or skin, then after exfoliation, I always apply moisturizer. I exfoliate my skin 2-3 times a week as over-exfoliating may lose the ability of the skin to absorb and retain moisture that makes the skin dry. Try this and you can achieve brighter and smoother skin.

It is important to remember that to successfully exfoliate the skin you should know your skin type and apply the exfoliating method that suits you well. Better if you can able to consult a dermatologist.
