Who doesn't love a day at the spa? Unfortunately, it seems that in the meantime those days are behind us, but why not bring the spa to you! I have found that one way I can enjoy my time indoors amid lockdown is by practising proper self-care and pampering with some in-home treatments.
This includes my weekly face mask, but how do you choose the right one? I prefer to use natural products as they are gentle on the skin and I know I am not adding any nasty chemicals that may affect the health of my skin later on. Below I have compiled some of the best natural face mask recipes that you can make at home to keep your face looking fabulous during lockdown! Because we all deserve a little self-care and love.
#1- The Banana Face Mask
Bananas are so common but vastly underestimated. They are packed full of nutrients that are great for your skin! This includes vitamin A which helps to fade dark spots and blemishes, it also helps to smooth rough skin. Vitamin B reduces dryness, and vitamin E helps the skin to fight the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The potassium in the bananas also acts to moisturise and hydrate, leaving you feeling refreshed. It is no wonder that this super fruit makes the perfect at-home face mask! Start by mashing up a medium-sized banana into a smooth paste. Make sure that the banana is ripe. From here all you need to do is gently apply it to your face and neck. Allow the mask to sit for 10 to 20 minutes and then it can be rinsed off with cold water. You can also mix in ¼ cup of plain yoghurt and two tablespoons of honey for a mask that will help to fight acne and blemishes.
#2- The Vinegar Face Mask
Vinegar has been used as a natural skin care product for centuries. The use of this natural toner dates back to the time of Helen of Troy. The effects are not well-known and it can be used as a great face mask to tone and cleanse your skin easily. After washing your face mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with two cups of water as a rinse to cleanse and tighten your skin. This is a great natural toner. For a mask, you can mix ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar with ¼ cup of water, applying it to the skin and allowing it to dry. Once dry you can wash it off with cool water and your skin will be left fresh and clean.
#3- The Milk Face Mask
Powdered milk is a great ingredient to mimic the fancy day spa that we all long from during lockdown. Simply mix ¼ cup of powdered milk with enough water to form a thick paste. Thoroughly coat your face with the homemade mixture and allow it to sit until it is completely dry. Then you can rinse it off with warm water, leaving your face rejuvenated and feeling fresh!
#4- The Oatmeal Face Mask
For a quick and easy face mask, oatmeal may just be the answer! It will have you looking and feeling your best in no time at all. You will need to combine ½ cup of hot, but not boiling, water with 1/3 cup of oatmeal. Once the water and oatmeal have settled for two to three minutes, you can mix in 2 tablespoons of plain yoghurt, 2 tablespoons of honey, and one egg white only. Apply it as a thin layer to your face and allow it to sit for 10 to 15 minutes. You can then rinse it off with warm water. But when rinsing, make sure you use a strainer in the sink to avoid clogging up your drain!
#5- The Mayonnaise Face Mask
You do not need expensive creams to have your skin looking its best! Why spend hundreds of dollars when you have mayonnaise already in the fridge at home? That's right, I said mayonnaise! This face mask gives a soothing effect and can be made with just whole-egg mayonnaise. All you need to do is to gently spread the mayonnaise over your face and leave it for about 20 minutes. Then wipe it off and rinse your face under cool water. It leaves my face feeling smooth and clean every single time. It does not get any easier than that!
